Animation, Save The Date

Writer's picture: Design TeamDesign Team

For Degree Show 2021 to pick up traction we needed a way to get peoples attention fast and have them remember or save the date that it is planned to launch on. The Animation for ‘Save the Date’ was created to send out to people via email and social media to make them excited for the event. The idea itself started from the animation team looking into typographic based motion graphics and animation that appealed to each person. These were then taken and focused on until we had a selection that we could take inspiration from. After that a storyboard was drawn up so that there was a template for me to work from. The basic main idea is shown in the image below.

The concept was to use the logo we had previously decided on for our brand to stretch into frame and remain in focus for a few seconds to grab peoples attention, then to have the shape morph and become the launch date along with some other information that was made clear to us in the guidelines.

Taking some ideas from videos we had seen online led us to have the end part of the animation show text that becomes a larger body that says 14th May (the launch date of DS2021).

Prior to this we thought of including some very erratic motion graphics based on others works such as these.

Designs like this would be problematic for the type of animation we are going for as the information on screen should be very clear to the people reading it. These designs would also not be the best at grabbing peoples attention that have difficulties with their eyes as they have too much going on at one time to focus on the right part.

This is the final motion graphics/animation that we have decided on as a team to be sent out as a ‘Save the Date’ memo. Combining different methods of motion graphics to show what we can do as designers and get peoples interest to flow towards the Instagram, twitter, blog, and then the degree show itself. The final aims to be clean looking to follow our brand guidelines and only really using white on black along with some cyan accents to break up the large bodies of text. Something that I wanted to avoid was using the same old oversaturated moving typography that is animated in a way that describes the word that is shown, such as the example shown before that says ‘floating’ and appears to be floating.

The final animation will be used in a GIF format for places such as emails, twitter and websites, and mp4 or other video format when used on Instagram and platforms that do not support GIF. It loops perfectly back to the start after the screen wipes with ‘Save the Date’ so that it does not have to be clicked on to be viewed, overall increasing the amount of people who will see it and click on links provided to view DS2021.
