I am Megan Muir, a 3rd year Visual Communication and Design Student at University of Highlands and Islands at Perth. I’m from the Scottish Borders which is where I done my HNC/HND at Border College in Galashiels. I have always had an interest in design and the creative world, since a young age I loved movies and the behind the scenes of them. The postproduction always fascinated me. Movies like ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Trilogy, MCU, Disney movies and the animations.
I like working on a lot of different kind of projects, my personal favourites are Branding, Advertising, digital design, and packaging. I feel like my strongest work and my proudest comes from these projects. I found this out early on in my college years. My first graded unit in my HNC course was a Branding projects for a coffee company. I received an ‘A’ for my work on this project and its one of my favourites. For this project we ere asked to design a brand identity for a coffee shop going by the name of ‘Froth’. I experimented with this project by designing my own Typography for the logo I had in mind. My favourite deliverable from this project was the A3 poster. It was a fun challenge that I enjoyed so much and work hard on.
I like trying new things all the time and have recently got into painting again. It’s interesting adding traditional media like painting back into a world that is extremely digitalised. I’ve also really admired Videography. It’s something I really want to have great skill in, so have started trying new things out with that and teaching myself skills in video editing.
Another skill I have is photography, another project I done in College was a digital design project for an upcoming BBC programme called ‘Seven Deadly Sins’. This project we were given a fair bit of free range on the media we could use. I approached it from a photography stye. I styled I hadn’t used a lot so was excited to try something new. I also used the quote “The windows are the eye to the soul: as inspiration for this project. Focusing my attention, the eyes and using colours and facial expressions to show the emotion of each Sin.
This semester has been an interesting one with Covid-19. Being back home and not being on campus has had its challenges and not the university experience any of us were expecting or hoping for. It’s been a good challenge as well though, getting back to a very self-directed way of working has helped me grow confidence in myself and teaching myself new things that I hope I will carry throughout my present and future career.
