My Art Journey - Ida Ramic

Writer's picture: Design TeamDesign Team

Hi, my name is Ida and I am an Illustrator and Graphic Designer with education and experience from around the world. I have been making art all my life and use it to express myself and communicate ideas with the world. I have a background in using traditional media, but at the moment I mostly use digital software such as Adobe Illustrator and Procreate.

My style is quite varied and I have designed everything from business logos and leaflets to websites and custom illustrations. However, I enjoy creating detailed illustrations or artworks for children most of all. I want my work to inspire and educate future generaions, and to show other children they too can make a living doing what they love. I have always admired nature and been inspired by it, especially animals, and most of my work is focused around them.

My journey as an artist started as soon as I was old enough to hold a pencil, and drag it in circles along the walls of my parent’s flat. I recall photos from our family album in which I thoroughly covered the dining table in acrylic paint, table cloth included. It must have been difficult to deal with, but I am grateful to have had the freedom to explore my interests and have supportive parents and family.

I continued doodling throughout my time in nursery, creating my own little world on paper. I also went to numerous art workshops where I created colourful images which were later exhibited in the town museum. My mother’s drawers are still filled with those drawings. It was at those workshops where I explored all the different media and drawing always stayed my favourite way to express myself.

I was primary school when my skills first sparked interest of those around me. I remember carrying around a book with drawing tutorials and started teaching my classmates how to draw different animals, illustrated other pupil’s posters and spent hours making drawings which I would later find trampled on the floor. But I kept going.

It was in high school where I decided to make a living from what I do. In my hometown I spent many of the lessons doodling and turning my notebooks into sketchbooks, trying to escape the pressure. Some of my teachers were actually surprisingly supportive and I remember leaving some of my drawings to them as a gift.

I was only during my high school student exchange experience in the United States that I started pouring emotions onto paper, filling it with neon colours and symbolic images. My art teacher at the time was very supportive and I spent most of my time in her classes. She helped me enter my artworks into competitions, made them part of exhibitions and gave me a chance to win a couple of prizes and sell some of my work. I was even allowed to put my artworks up in the corner of the classroom. She even made me consider becoming and Art Teacher some day too. She helped me build a portfolio which got me to where I am today.

Currently I am Visual Communication student and a children’s illustration enthusiast with five years of freelancing experience. I have done workshops in the V&A Museum in Dundee and won competitions in Italy and the United States. I would like to try something different in the future and possibly work as part of a team in a creative studio. I would also like to publish a picturebook.

I am determined to continue on this journey, stay true to myself and pursue an art career, be it as a Graphic Designer, Illustratior, or someone completely different.

Thank you for reading.
